I started pastoral ministry in 2012: bi-vocational, highly analytical, and incredibly green. My sermons were dry and informational. They lacked depth and pathos, and I struggled to hold the congregation’s attention. My preaching classes had been largely theoretical, and I had no solid, practical framework for preparing sermons week after week. The whole process felt scattered and inefficient.
Then we moved to a two-church district, our first child was born, and I started graduate school, all at once. The time pressure became intense. I knew I had to become far more efficient, for my churches and for my family. So I went back to the best preaching books I knew, Robinson, Morris, and Piper, and extracted the most practical principles I could find. From those insights I built the bare bones of a sermon preparation form.
The system proved itself on a Friday evening when hospital visits and family needs had left me with almost nothing prepared. I sat down, prayed, opened the form, and moved through the steps. By God’s grace, I prepared a clear, compelling, Bible-centered sermon in four to five hours!
It proved itself again on a Sabbath morning when I discovered I’d left my outline behind and had to preach without notes! Because the process had driven the text so deep, the sermon was fully internalized. No one knew I didn't have a sermon outline but an elder, myself, and God.
Over more than ten years, this twelve-step system has transformed my preaching. It’s cut my preparation time in half, deepened my sermons, clarified my message, and restored precious ministry and family time. My wife Charity describes it plainly:
“Before my husband began using the Sermon Prep Blueprint, weekends were often stressful because sermon deadlines consumed our family time. After he followed this process consistently, everything changed. Our weekends became peaceful, and we finally had meaningful time together as a family.”
Now I share it so other pastors can redeem their time for what matters most.
