5-Day Sermon Prep Walkthrough
Day 4
Purpose, Form &

Choose Your Purpose6
Determine Your Form7
Gather Materials๐ Step 5
Choose Your Sermon’s Purpose
Every sermon should do one primary thing. Pick the one that fits your passage and your congregation’s need this week โ then let everything else serve that goal. Pick one of the following as your sermon’s purpose:
Explain something. The text has truth that needs unpacking โ your job is to make it clear.
Prove something. The text makes a claim your audience may doubt โ your job is to make it credible.
Apply something. The truth is clear โ your job is to show people what to do with it.
๐๏ธ Step 6
Determine Your Sermon Form
Form is the shape your sermon takes from opening to close. Choose the one that best fits your purpose and your passage’s natural movement. Pick one of the following as your sermon’s form:
Explain an idea. Walk through the truth systematically โ ideal for teaching-heavy passages.
Prove it. Build a case with evidence โ ideal when the congregation needs convincing.
Apply a principle. Take a truth and show its practical shape across real-life situations.
Problem / Solution. Name the tension, then reveal God’s answer โ creates natural momentum.
Not this / But this. Contrast the world’s way with God’s way โ great for ethical passages.
Narrative. Let the story carry the message โ ideal for biblical narrative passages.
๐๏ธ Step 7
Gather Your Supporting Materials
Aim for 2โ3 items in each category. You won’t use all of them โ gather more than you need, then choose the best in the edit.
2โ3 Facts
Statistics, research findings, or historical data that ground the truth in reality. Check Barna, Pew Research, or a quick Google Scholar search.
2โ3 Quotes
Theologians, authors, or public figures who say it memorably. Spurgeon, C.S. Lewis, and Tim Keller are perennial favourites for good reason.
2โ3 Illustrations
Stories or word pictures that make the truth visible. Personal stories of your own or from congregation members (with permission) are always winners because they hit close to home. Or try a Google search for “free sermon illustrations” for quick wins.
๐ก Worked Example โ Judges 16 (Samson)
Steps 5โ7 Applied to Samson’s Story
Purpose
Apply โ help the congregation recognise and avoid the slow creep of compromise in their own lives.
Form
Not this / But this โ contrast the path of compromise (Samson’s spiral) with the path of surrender (grace and restoration).
Facts
38% of pastors admit to a secret, ongoing sin struggle โ compromise is universal, not exceptional. (Barna)
Quotes
Spurgeon: “By perseverance the snail reached the ark.” โ grace meets us even after failure.
Illustrations
The barber’s clippers โ small, quiet, routine. Samson didn’t lose his strength in battle; he lost it in an ordinary tool, one snip at a time.
โฆ How the Outline Emerges
I. The anatomy of compromise โ how Samson got here (Not this)
II. The cost of compromise โ what it costs to stay (Not this)
III. The grace beyond compromise โ God’s door is still open (But this)
โก Action Step
30 Minutes to a Working Outline
1
Pick your sermon’s purpose โ explain, prove, or apply.
2
Choose your form from the six options above.
3
Gather 2โ3 facts, 2โ3 quotes, and 2โ3 illustrations. Don’t perfect them โ collect them.
4
Notice how your bullet + form + materials naturally suggest an outline. Jot it down.
Purpose set. Form chosen. Materials gathered. Steps 5โ7 complete. โ
Final Day Tomorrow โ Day 5
Intros and conclusions that hook from the first sentence and land with weight at the end. We wrap up the full system โ and there’s a little surprise waiting for you.
๐ Something extra on Day 5
Preach on,
P.S. Questions about which form fits your passage? Just shoot me a message โ I’m happy to think it through with you before Day 5.
